Last Will and Testament of Jehue Reader
Husband of Phebe (Transcribed)
I, Jehue Reader of the county of Henderson and State of Kentucky, being in common health of body, of sound mind and disposing memory, but knowing that it is appointed of all mankind once to die, do make my last will and testament in the manner and form following vizItem 1st. I give and bequeath to my son John Reader the tract of land on which he the said John now resides, laying on the brushy fork of Canoe Creek 300 acres more or less. There has been a division line maid by myself and John Reader which is to be added to the tract of land on which I now live.
I also divise to my said son John the following slaves for life which he now has in his possession to wit John, Alfred, and Priscilla and all her increase slaves for life and what other property he has now in his possession.
Item 2nd. I give and bequeath to my daughter Matilda H. Moss to her and her legal children or the legal ipue of her body the following property two Negro girls called and known by the name of Mary Ann and Patsey and their increase to said Matilda and her children, slaves for life, with what other property she has now in her possession which I gave her.
Item 3rd. I give and bequeath to my son William Reader a tract of land which I purchased of John L. Hancock containing one hundred and eight acres more or less lying on the waters of Canoe Creek, also a Negro boy by the name of Thee, and a Negro girl by the name of Elvira her and her increase, bed and furniture, a young mare, cow and calf, two sows and pigs.
Item 4th. I give and bequeath to my daughter Sally Wall who intermarried with Ottoway Wall, and her legal children, or the ipue of her body the following property a Negro girl by the name of Arrena, one by the name of Perlina, them and their increase to the said Sally and the legal children of her body slaves for life, with all the other property which I have previously given her, and which she has in her possession.
Item 5th. I give and bequeath to my daughter Lucy E. Pew who intermarried with William Pew, and her children, or legal ipue of her body the following property, towit, one Negro girl by the name of Margaret and mother by the name of Permelia, and their increase to the said Lucy and the legal children of her body slaves for life, with all the other property which she has in her possession.
Item 6th. I give and bequeath to my son Jehue W. Reader the tract of land on which I now reside, containing three hundred acres more or less. I have made an agreed upon line between the tract of land willed to my son John and the one willed to my son Jehue W. in which division line. I have added a small part of the tract I now devise to the said Jehue W. Reader, my son Jehue W. is now under age I therefore will not name the Negro boy and girl which he is to have, but leave it to his choice and discretion to select on boy and one girl out of eight which is from Ellis dow, when he arrives to the age of twenty one. I also devise to Jehue W. one horse out of my estate which he may make choice of when he arrives to the age of twenty one, one bed and furniture, one cow and calf, tow sows and pigs.
It is my will and desire that if any of my children herein before mentions should die and leave no legal ipue of their body, that then and in that case, the property willed to her or him shall return and revest back to the survivors of them. As I and my wife are both living. It is therefore my whish and desire and will that neither division shall take place during the life of me and my wife. And if my wife should out live me, she is to have all the property which is not herein particulary devised to all of our children, which are six in number, subject to her management and control during her life, and at her death all the property in her possession is to be equally divided among all my children herein before named. I hereby nominate and appoint my son John Reader as Executor to this my last will and testament to carry it on to full force and effect.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 21st day of April 1835

This last will and testament of Jehu Reader was produced in court, and proved by the oath of Alexander H. Bailey and Peterson Wall subscribing witnesses thereto, according to law, and ordered to be recorded. (see order book D. pages 268)
